May and June shows

Hi everyone, I hope you’ve been doing well and hearing lots of great music! We’ve got some exciting shows and news these next couple of months, including my upcoming releases on Irabbagast and some really cool shows.

I’ll be releasing a double record in the fall entitled Invisible Horizon that features Matt Mitchell and the Mivos Quartet. We’ve also just recorded the next installment of I Don’t Hear Nothin’ but the Blues which adds guitar extraordinaire Ava Mendoza to the tandem of Mike Pride, Mick Barr and I. We can’t wait for you to hear that as well!

Hello, everyone! I hope you’ve been staying warm out there… I happened to be in Chicago for the -50 degree day and that was… insane.

Anyways, we’re up to some new and exciting things here; I’m finishing up my next release, which will combine a record of the piano quintet I wrote for Matt Mitchell and Mivos Quartet with a solo mezzo soprano album. This double record will be called Invisible Horizon and should be out by the end of the year! Stay tuned. Irabbagast Records is also excited to be releasing new albums by the Uptown Jazz Tentet and Anders Svanoe, among others, in the upcoming months. And I look forward to reuniting with great French saxophonist and composer Sylvain Rifflet for an upcoming tour featuring Jim Black and some new music written by Sylvain and myself, as well as a residency at the Zagreb Music Biennale in April, where I’ll perform solo as well as debut a piece I’ve written for myself with the renowned Zagreb Saxophone Quartet. Enthusiastically welcoming 2019!

Happy new year everyone! 2018 was an incredible year, and here’s to continued music, positivity and music making in 2019! Highlights of last year include the release of Dr. Quixotic’s Traveling Exotics (Irabbagast 010), my “super-charged spectacle of daredevil adventure” with “a contagious fun factor, manifested in the musicians’ playful interactions (Downbeat Magazine, 4 1/2 star review)”. The album just recently showed up in several year-end lists, including Francis Davis’ NPR Critics Poll and a great mention and review in Rolling Stone Magazine’s jazz list. Thank you to everyone who spent time listening to it! Further highlights of the year include performances with Dave Douglas, Mary Halvorson and Maria Schneider, as well as recording and touring with Barry Altschul and Uri Caine, and the debut of my 14 movement song cycle for mezzo soprano voice, mezzo soprano saxophone, piano, oboe and clarinet at National Sawdust as part of their Stone Commissioning Series.

2019 looks to be even better; I’ve got a new double recording coming out later in the year; it’ll pair up a solo mezzo soprano saxophone recording with a piano quintet and sopranino quintet that features the Mivos Quartet. The Dr. Quixotic group is also performing at the Winter Jazzfest in New York, and I’m looking forward to performances this year with Ralph Alessi, Maria Schneider, Louis Cole, Uri Caine, Dave Douglas and many more.

Thanks for your continuing support! I hope to see you out and about. We’ve got a new tagline at Irabbagast– MAKE STUFF UP! Here’s to a prosperous and continually creative and positive year.

Jon
