July and August Shows

Hi everyone,

I hope your summers are off to a great start! It’s been busy over here, with recent great performances with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, a recording for the great Uri Caine and my recent song cycle debut as part of the Stone at National Sawdust commissioned premier. July and August promise to be even better, with my debut as a leader at Smalls and performing at the Newport Jazz Festival as well as performances with Mike Pride, Bojan Vuletic and a short but sweet Norway jaunt.

My recent Irabbagast Records release, Dr Quixotic’s Traveling Exotics, received a rave 4 1/2 star review in Downbeat Magazine and also was previewed/reviewed on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and the great reviews keep pouring in! We are really proud of this music and hope you take a minute to check it out.

Thank you for your continued support!

Also coming out is a solo mezzo soprano saxophone CD, recorded in the Vigelund Mausoleum in Oslo, Norway.

There are also several great performances coming up in the next few months, including stints with Dave Douglas, Andrew Bain, the Maria Schneider Orchestra and many more. I’m also bringing two different groups to the New Stone this month, on the 19th and 20th, so hope to see you out and about!

New albums! September and October shows

Hi everyone, I hope you’ve been having a great summer!  It’s been very busy over here, with new projects and recordings on the horizon!!

The recording we made a year ago during a tour in Buenos Aires is almost done being mastered and we are looking at an early 2018 release date. Just finalized is the artwork by Colin Batty, and it’s absolutely insane. The group, minus Tim, is doing a short tour in Europe starting at the end of September.

I just recorded a new solo record on the F mezzo soprano saxophone, and that record will come out early next year as well and is tentatively titled Dark Horizon.

I’m also proud to say that I have been awarded a composer’s grant from the National Sawdust composers’ series; we will be debuting a new work in July 2018.

Best,

May and June Shows; Organ Trio at the Jazz Standard

Hello, I hope the spring is treating you well!  There’s a lot happening on the homefront these next couple of months!

My record label, Irabbagast Records, has released a CD by Madison, Wisconsin native Anders Svanoe, who has performed with Roscoe Mitchell, Evan Parker, Craig Taborn and others.  His new release is entitled State of the Baritone and features 15 originals by Anders and his mighty baritone.

We have also released the Uptown Jazz Tentet’s debut recording, There It Is, featuring many of the great musicians I went to Juilliard with so many years ago.

In the works, Irabbagast has Svanoe’s State of the Baritone Volume 2 coming up, as well as a solo recording by contrabass clarinetist Josh Sinton, a straight ahead jazz outing from trumpet great Brandon Lee, and the Jon Irabagon Quartet’s new record, which will feature the great Tim Hagans on trumpet.  Keep coming back here or to facebook.com/jonirabagonmusic for information as it comes along!

My new organ trio that debuted during my week-long residency at the Stone back in March was asked to headline a night a New York City’s Jazz Standard, one of my favorite places to play.  We’ll be playing two sets on Wednesday, July 26th and features Gary Versace on organ and Nasheet Waits on drums.  Mark your calendars!

Thanks for reading!  Here is a list of my May and June performances; hope to see you out and about!

Residency at the Stone; March and April Shows

Hello everyone!  I hope you are enjoying the warm(ing) weather.  It’s been a great couple of months for music for me, and the beginning of 2017 saw my participation in a couple of great recordings by Matt Mitchell and Perry Smith, a compositional retreat to Sea Ranch, California, and stints with Darcy James Argue and Dave Douglas.   I also found a mint condition F mezzo saxophone that I plan on adding to the repertoire!

I’m excited to be kicking off March with a week-long residency at the Stone, one of my favorite venues in New York City.  I couldn’t be happier with the line-ups and the music for each of the nights.  Please stop by as often as you can and let your friends know about it!  There will be tons of new music debuted that week, including a new book of music for organ trio that is influenced by Jimmy Smith, Larry Young and Sun Ra, a brand new string quartet featuring the Sirius Quartet alongside Matt Mitchell on piano and a meeting of the Jon Irabagon Trio (featuring Barry Altschul and Mark Helias) with trombonist Ray Anderson!

As always, thank you for your continued support.  If you would like to follow my music online, please go to facebook.com/jonirabagonmusic and “like” that page so we can stay in touch.
