Residency at the Stone; March and April Shows

Hello everyone!  I hope you are enjoying the warm(ing) weather.  It’s been a great couple of months for music for me, and the beginning of 2017 saw my participation in a couple of great recordings by Matt Mitchell and Perry Smith, a compositional retreat to Sea Ranch, California, and stints with Darcy James Argue and Dave Douglas.   I also found a mint condition F mezzo saxophone that I plan on adding to the repertoire!

I’m excited to be kicking off March with a week-long residency at the Stone, one of my favorite venues in New York City.  I couldn’t be happier with the line-ups and the music for each of the nights.  Please stop by as often as you can and let your friends know about it!  There will be tons of new music debuted that week, including a new book of music for organ trio that is influenced by Jimmy Smith, Larry Young and Sun Ra, a brand new string quartet featuring the Sirius Quartet alongside Matt Mitchell on piano and a meeting of the Jon Irabagon Trio (featuring Barry Altschul and Mark Helias) with trombonist Ray Anderson!

As always, thank you for your continued support.  If you would like to follow my music online, please go to facebook.com/jonirabagonmusic and “like” that page so we can stay in touch.

Thank you!

Jon

November and December shows

Hi everyone! I just finished up a crazy, life-affirming musical week in New York City that featured performing with John Zorn and Dave Douglas at one end, and as a guest soloist with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orcestra just a few days later. Add on top of that a solo sopranino show and the CD release of the Mary Halvorson Octet’s new record, and I can safely say it’s been one of the best weeks for me ever!

As it gets colder and the Cubbies inch towards a world championship, here is a list of my upcoming performances for the rest of 2016. Highlights include tours with four great drummer bandleaders!! Barry Altschul, Rudy Royston, Teun Vergruggen and Andrew Bain all have completely different musical visions to share, and we are excited to get the music to you!

It’s been an incredible year, and here’s to more music in 2017!

Thanks
Jon

News and September and October shows

Hi everyone! As we move on into the fall, I wanted to send an update as to the new happenings in my musical world. There’s plenty of new music coming your way, both in person and digitally!!

I kick off September playing at the Chicago Jazz Festival for the first time since I was 19! I’m playing with Barry Altschul’s 3Dom Factor at 330 PM on Sunday, September 4 at the Von Freeman Stage. Shortly after that, I’m taking the Behind the Sky quartet (with Rudy Royston, Luis Perdomo and Yasushi Nakamura) to Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the first time to play several concerts, give masterclasses and lessons and to record our next record, which will be out in the middle of 2017 on Irabbagast Records. More as that develops.

Later in September and October, I’m doing a short Northeast tour with Barry Altschul’s 3Dom Factor as well as local NYC shows, including my first solo sopranino solo in town in several months and the CD release show for the Mary Halvorson Octet, as well as playing in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for two nights as a guest for a new piece my former teacher Victor Goines has written!

Finally, Irabbagast Records is expanding its output and releasing two records from great musicians and dear friends of mine. First, Madison, Winsconsin, resident Anders Svanoe is releasing a baritone saxophone record with bass and drums entitled State of the Baritone. It’s a great representation of his fiery, expansive playing and features one of my favorite baritone saxophone sounds ever. Also coming out in a few months is the first record by the Uptown Jazz Tentet, a group led by Brandon Lee, Willie Applewhite and James Burton III, three of my good friends from back in the Juilliard days. More info on both of these projects soon.

As always, thanks for your support!
Best,
Jon

Top CDs of 2015; January and February Shows

Happy new year!  2015 was an exciting and monumental year, for sure!

My two releases, Behind the Sky (featuring Tom Harrell, Luis Perdomo, Yasushi Nakamura and Rudy Royston) and Inaction is an Action (solo sopranino saxophone) were both named to several year-end lists!  Behind the Sky placed in the NPR Poll, and Inaction is an Action was awarded here and here!

In addition, three CDs I was a proud sideman on (all released in October, coincidentally) were all named to various year-end lists, including all three on the aforementioned NPR poll.  Brazen Heart (by Dave Douglas), Mauch Chunk (by Mostly Other People do the Killing) and Tales of the Unforeseen (by Barry Altschul) are all distinctly different and fun in their own ways.

I did a lot of touring in 2015 with the above groups, including my first time in Australia and bringing my group to the Detroit Jazz Festival.  Hopefully 2016 will bring even more music!  Thanks for your support throughout the years.  Positivity rules!
